CARE Day

Whew! We're settling into summer, so now I have a moment to breathe and reflect on a few last things from this school year.

One of the amazing things our school district does is an event called CARE Day, which is for all the special education students in the district. It's a full day field trip that includes track and field events, petting zoo and hayrides, games and more. Each student is buddied up with a neurotypical peer to support them throughout the day.

Look at that grin!

Teddy had an absolute blast, as he does every year! We know this because we had a plethora of videos and photos coming from our sitter who teaches high school special ed and from his best friend's mom. We hadn't realized it was a thing for parents to go and cheer him on for the sporting events because, let's face it, we miss out on some communication with a child who doesn't communicate with spoken words. (Sometimes I think school assumes we know things, especially for annual events, but sometimes no one has ever told us, as was the case here.)

Regardless, Teddy had such a crowd cheering for him, as we could hear in each of the videos. It didn't matter that he was clearly in last place ... he had a huge smile on his face the entire time and was loving the experience. In fact, I think he loved that he got to do it longer than all the other kids! I wish I could have that attitude for all my runs.

As you can see from the pictures, Teddy loved his day. It's not a surprise that one of his paras took to calling him "portable sunshine" as we finished up the school year. Teddy truly is so darn joyful and loves to share that joy with others so much of the time (except when his routine is messed up or things are out of order or he's home with us lame folks instead of all his fun people at school and sitters).

I love his smiling face centered in the group!

We're so grateful Teddy has been welcomed with open arms at his school, made so many friends and is so darn loved.

Bubbles are always fun!
